Service members that support Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) may have been exposed to burn pits. You may be aware of the exposure or you may not actually know for without a doubt. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recognizes that the harmful effects of burn pit exposure often do not appear for many years. The VA recognizes that there is a delay in symptoms but allows Service members deployed in support of OIF/OEF to submit a claim even without the onset of symptoms. If you currently have symptoms that you feel are related to the toxic effects of burn pits, you may be eligible for disability compensation. Information about burn pits and airborne hazards can be found at https://www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/burnpits. If you have additional questions or need more information, contact Soldier & Family Readiness at 1-800-292-9464, option 1.
