The Department of Workforce Development (DWD), Office of Veteran Employment Services has identified a new program to help get unemployed veterans back into the workforce.
Rick O’Brien from DWD highlighted a new subsidized employment program for veterans called Hire Hero’s (HH). Unemployed veterans using this program can receive immediate income, create a positive work history, increase future employ-ability by developing a strong work ethic, responsibility, dependability, punctuality and longer-term career preparation.
To be eligible for this program, the veteran must:
Be at least 18 years old
Be a veteran with verified status
Within 7 years of discharge from service
Be ineligible to participate in the Wisconsin Works
Be unemployed for at least 4 weeks
Be able to pass a substance abuse screening
The program is set up to allow up to 1040 hours (26 weeks/6 months) of subsidized employment. The program subsidizes employment by reimbursing the employer for wages (Minimum wage, $7.25), social security and medicare, state and federal unemployment compensation, and worker’s compensation.
Veterans will be connected to employers that WDVA has established relationships with that are veteran friendly. The WDVA is always looking opportunities to expand the program to other companies.
